The Slip Simulator™ Training System

Mitigating slips, trips and falls

The Inbiodyn Slip Simulator™ is the foundation of our organization, and it is an excellent example of our Learn by Doing philosophy in action. Across virtually every industry, slips, trips and falls (STF) are among the most common reasons for injury. Existing techniques that have historically been taught were not effective at making a real difference in mitigating these risks.

A Los Alamos Laboratory study showed a 70% reduction in slip, trip and fall accidents for Slip Simulator trainees.

What is the Slip Simulator?

The Slip Simulator is an experiential training system that lets trainees safely experience everyday hazards like slippery surfaces (simulating ice or wet flooring), uneven or slanted surfaces, and trip hazards like cracked sidewalks, parking curbs, electrical cords, and much more. All trainees are hooked into a safety harness that gives complete freedom of movement while eliminating the risk of an actual fall.

Origin And Development

The concept of the Slip Simulator was developed from laboratory research at Virginia Tech. Around 2008, United Parcel Service (UPS) approached researchers at Virginia Tech for help with reducing their large number of STF accidents. The result was the first generation of the Slip Simulator and Egress Trainer. When UPS deployed these systems, they saw a massive 50% reduction in injury claims. The next implementation of Slip Simulator training was at Los Alamos National Labs, where a controlled study showed a 70% reduction in STF accidents for training participants, and a remarkable 30% reduction for those that only observed training.

Inbiodyn-led Onsite Safety Training

Safety training at your workplace

You can also schedule onsite safety training led by Inbiodyn trainers. These onsite training events can be just one day or multiple weeks, and can be at just one location or at multiple, based on your need.

Preparing for onsite training

  • The demonstration area for Mobile Slip Simulator must be at least 20’ wide x 42’ long, with an additional 20’ in length temporarily needed for the truck.
  • If sufficient interior space is available, access doors need to be 14’ high and 10’ wide.
  • The demonstration area should be on a level and paved surface.
  • Provide an on-site contact for communications about the mobile unit arrival, security protocols, and facility access.
  • Mark the demonstration area with orange cones so the driver will know where to park the mobile unit. Once in place it will not be able to move until the driver returns to pick it up.
  • The side stage door folds down to create a stage providing easy access and generous seating.
  • There is additional seating in the back of the trailer for inclement weather.
  • 48” main entry door is on the side as shown.
  • In certain cases the trailer may need to be dropped off or picked up after hours or on weekends.

Electrical requirements for Mobile Slip Simulator

  • Typical events are run with 15amp service using standard outlet plugins.
  • The mobile system has a built-in generator to power air conditioning.
  • Heat is supplied via the propane furnace installed in the trailer.
